Named by Governor Macquarie in 1821, Campbell Town was one of four original garrison towns on the road between Hobart and Launceston. Named by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1821 and established as a town in 1826, Campbell Town was one of four original garrison towns linking Hobart and Launceston. Its centrepiece is the Red Bridge, completed in 1836 to 1838 from more than 1.5 million convict-made bricks, recognised as the oldest surviving brick arch bridge in Australia and still carrying the Heritage Highway today.
The heritage runs deep: the Foxhunters Return coaching inn (c.1833), a Convict Brick Trail along High Street, the longest continuously running country show in Australia, and the 1874 Transit of Venus, observed here by the US Navy.
Campbell Town sits almost exactly halfway between the two capitals, 66km from Launceston and 132km from Hobart. It's the main service town for Hobart-Launceston travellers and the surrounding wool-growing district, with median house prices well under both capital cities and gross yields running 5.3% to 5.8%.

What's actually funded or already delivered, in Campbell Town and the wider Northern Midlands.
Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme. A $217.9 million scheme delivering water to 7,000 hectares across roughly 50 irrigators, practical completion targeted for September 2026. It serves the Isis Valley and Macquarie River district, Longford, Perth and Evandale, not Campbell Town directly, but it's the largest funded project in the wider region.
A working wool district. Campbell Town has been an important wool-growing district since the 1830s. Regional agricultural output was valued at $297.8 million in 2020/21.
Regional food processing. TPI Enterprises, Swift Australia, Tasmanian Quality Meats and Ingham's anchor food processing employment across the Northern Midlands, at Cressy and Longford.
Midland Highway Action Plan, Campbell Town North. Part of the $565 million Midland Highway upgrade, funded 80:20 by the Australian and Tasmanian Governments. Covers 19.8km between Epping Forest and Campbell Town.
Section A completed in early 2024. Section B, the final section north of Campbell Town, is funded and construction is expected to start in early 2027 subject to environmental approvals.
Heritage streets protected. The town centre itself is excluded from the highway upgrade due to heritage constraints, keeping the historic streetscape intact.
$8 million Campbell Town Streetscape Redevelopment, a federal Priority Community Infrastructure Program grant. Stage 1 began September 2025; Stage 2, extending to the Red Bridge, was approved in July 2026.
All grant funds committed to be spent by 31 December 2026: road resurfacing, footpaths, bus stops, parking, landscaping and stormwater upgrades along High Street.
Campbell Town Community Health Centre. An existing Multi-Purpose Service with 22 residential aged care beds, 4 sub-acute beds and GP/allied health services on site.
